Sold in more than 100 countries, Oreos are, without a doubt, one of the world’s favorite cookies, but they are particularly popular in the US. In fact, research suggests that in 2020, more than 71.2 million Americans consumed the chocolate-flavored sandwich cookies, which are produced by the US snack brand Nabisco.

Oreos are so popular, that in 2022, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) dedicated time to finding out the very best way to eat Oreos by twisting, peeling, and cutting over 1,000 cookies (yes, really). They didn’t come to any definitive conclusion, and ultimately, the best way to eat a cookie is subjective. But we say there’s a pretty good case to be made for adding them to a dessert, like pudding pie or tiramisu.

Are Oreos vegan?

Oreos are an ultra-processed snack made with multiple ingredients, but none of them are animal products. This means that this popular cookie is suitable for vegans. It hasn’t always been this way, however. In fact, up until 1998, they were actually made with lard.

Many varieties of Oreo are vegan, too, but not all. Double-Stuf, for example, is animal-free, and so is Golden and Mega Stuf. Watch out for flavors covered in fudge, however, as these contain dairy.
