Back in 1966, Alfred Peet opened his very first coffee shop in Berkeley, CA—but not without doing his research first. Before the doors opened for the first time, Peet studied the coffee industry in Holland, where he grew up, and where his father ran a coffee and tea business. He also visited Indonesia, where he sampled traditional dark-roasted coffee. This experience inspired him to create a new coffee shop in California that served top-quality dark-roasted beans—and customers loved it. Peet’s Coffee continued to grow throughout the second half of the 20th century, and today, there are more than 220 locations in California and nearly 300 overall.

Today, Peet’s Coffee offers more than just your standard espresso (though that’s always on the menu, of course). The menu now features sparkling cold brews, fruity specialty teas, and even breakfast sandwiches, many of which are plant-based. Wondering about the best vegan options at Peet’s? Keep reading to find out more.

Is Peet’s Coffee vegan-friendly?

Peet’s Coffee is not entirely vegan, but it does offer plenty of plant-based options. Many of its beverages can be customized with plant-based milks like oat, almond, or soy milk. The coffee chain currently charges extra for dairy-free milk, but starting on June 4, all vegan milk options will be offered without an additional cost. This decision followed an extensive campaign from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which enlisted the help of Sir Paul McCartney (who wrote a letter to the organization asking it to drop the charges).

Peet’s Coffee: The best plant-based options

While not all menu items are vegan, Peet’s provides plenty of options for those following a plant-based diet. Just be sure to check for any non-vegan ingredients, like dairy or honey, in specific drinks or food items.

1 Cold brew oat lattes

Peet’s Coffee offers two plant-based Cold Brew Oat Lattes—Original and Horchata. The Original combines lightly sweetened oat milk with Peet’s signature cold brew, while the Horchata version adds a hint of cinnamon sugar for extra warmth and sweetness. Both offer the perfect balance of bold coffee and velvety, dairy-free oat milk richness. If you’re in the mood for a classic iced coffee, Peet’s also serves Iced Espresso and Iced Americano. There’s also just plain cold brew, too, of course.

2 Everything Plant-Based Sandwich

This savory breakfast sandwich features Beyond Breakfast Sausage, fluffy Just Egg (which is a vegan egg patty made from mung beans), and melty dairy-free cheddar, all stacked on a perfectly seasoned everything bagel thin. The hearty sandwich is great for those days when you’re on the go—it’s satisfying, tasty, and packed with protein (each serving contains 21 grams of the nutrient).

3 Sparkling iced tea and lemonade

If you’re in the mood for a refreshing, chilled, sparkling drink, Peet’s Coffee has a few options to choose from. And we’re not just talking about your standard soda. The Sparkling Passion Fruit Tea combines bold black tea, passion fruit purée, and club soda. The Sparkling Lemonade adds fizz to a classic favorite, while the Iced Black Tea Lemonade and Iced Green Tea Lemonade offer perfectly balanced sweet-tart refreshment.

4 Iced fruit tea

Of course, you can always order a classic iced black tea from Peet’s Coffee, but if you’re craving something with a bit more fruity flair, there are plenty of options. Try the Tropical Berry Green Tea Shaker, Berry Hibiscus Tea Shaker, or Strawberry Lemon Fruit Tea Shaker, all made with lemonade and fresh strawberry slices. If you’re looking to keep it simple, iced green tea and iced herbal tea are also available. For those who prefer hot tea, you can also choose from options like Chamomile Citrus Tea Pouch, Organic Breakfast Tea Pouch, and Organic Mint Melange Tea Pouch, all served with hot water.

5 Sparkling cold brew

If you’ve never tried combining cold brew with fruity syrup, consider this your sign to give it a shot. Peet’s offers two ultra-refreshing and unique options: the zesty Sparkling Grapefruit Cold Brew with grapefruit syrup and club soda, and the Sparkling Peppermint Vanilla Cold Brew, a tasty mix of cool peppermint, smooth vanilla, and Baridi Cold Brew.

6 Dark roast coffee

True to its roots, Peet’s Coffee still offers its signature dark roast coffee, but if that’s too much for you, you can also opt for a medium roast blend instead. Other coffee options include the classic espresso and Americano, both available with a range of dairy-free milks if you prefer.

7 Peanut butter cookies

A cup of coffee or tea is arguably never complete without a little snack on the side. If you’re in the mood for a baked good, Peet’s Coffee has one vegan option for you, and it’s a good one: a peanut butter cookie.
