Hong Kong-based company Global Brands Group (GBG) will no longer sell fur. The commitment means that GBG-managed companies—which include more than a dozen brands such as Juicy Couture, Kenneth Cole, Ellen Tracy, AllSaints, Frye, and Spyder—will all be fur free. GBG also manages Calvin Klein, which was one of the first major brands to ban fur when it announced its commitment in 1994. GBG made the decision to ditch fur after talks with animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). “PETA applauds Global Brands Group for its compassionate and business-savvy decision to ban fur, which shows that the future of fashion is vegan,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said. “PETA urges all retailers to meet the rising demand for luxurious, cruelty-free alternatives or be shunned by ethical shoppers, who simply don’t want animals to be abused and killed for coats, collars, or cuffs.” Fur is quickly falling out of fashion as a growing list of designers, retailers, and brands have pledged to no longer sell it, including Donna Karan, Michael Kors, Gucci, Versace, Chanel, Prada, Coach, and Macy’s. Last year, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 44 into law, which will make California the first state in the country to prohibit the sale and manufacture of new fur statewide by January 1, 2023. A similar ban is currently under consideration in New York City.
