Research results published in the British Medical Journal says what many leading doctors and nutritionists have been saying for years: ditch the milk.

A new study published in the British Medical Journal says that not only does cow’s milk contribute to bone fractures in women, it can actually double the risk of early death for those who drink three glasses or more a day. The research—which was conducted in Sweden on 61,000 women and 45,000 men—debunks the dairy industry’s claim that drinking cow’s milk is necessary for bone health. According to the study’s lead author, Professor Karl Michaelsson, “Our results may question the validity of recommendations to consume high amounts of milk to prevent fragility fractures. A higher consumption of milk in women and men is not accompanied by a lower risk of fracture and instead may be associated with a higher rate of death.” Leading doctors and nutritionists have long refuted the milk industry’s claims, recommending plant-based sources of calcium like broccoli, collards, tofu, beans, and sweet potatoes.
