A landmark coalition of plant-based companies—from Daiya Foods and Field Roast to Turtle Island and Follow Your Heart—have joined forces to support the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s 2015 recommendations to eat less meat. Revised every five years, this year’s proposed guidelines are the most pro-vegetarian to date, pointing to both disease prevention and environmental sustainability as reasons to adopt a meat-free diet. Today, the group submitted letters to the US Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services encouraging the consumption of more plant-based foods, including vegetarian protein sources like legumes, soy, wheat gluten, nuts, and seeds. Comments regarding the guidelines are being accepted until May 8, at which point the federal committee will release its final recommendations.
