The first-ever pizza, invented in Naples, Italy, wasn’t topped with cheese. In fact, it was just a simple combination of tomato, herbs, olive oil, and dough. This pizza, known as marinara, is still a popular choice in Italy, and for good reason. When made with high-quality, fresh ingredients, it’s a simple yet delicious low-cost meal choice. But let’s be honest, these days, most people don’t consider a pizza a pizza until it’s laden with cheese—usually mozzarella.

Cheese pizza was also an Italian creation. According to legend, the extra ingredient was added in honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy in the 1800s, who preferred her marinara with added cheese. Some believe the dish was eaten before this, but either way, pizza with cheese has become a global sensation.

In the US, where the pizza restaurant industry is worth more than $50 billion, pepperoni (nearly always served with cheese) is consistently voted the number one pizza in the country. It’s closely followed by sausage and extra cheese, according to a 2023 survey from YouGov.

If you’re not into dairy, you can, of course, make your own vegan cheese pizza from scratch (or buy one from the frozen aisle). But thanks to growing demand for plant-based options, you can also buy dairy-free cheese pizzas from pizzerias and delivery chains.
